Is DRHS a charity?
Denmark Road High School, as an academy, is classed as an Exempt Charity. As such we are not registered with, or directly regulated by, the Charity Commission. We are instead regulated by a Principal Regulator, the Secretary of State for Education. Exempt charities must have charitable purposes and apply them for the public benefit. We must comply with the general law of charity. Our trustees are responsible for the control and management of the administration of us as a charity. We benefit from the same tax advantages as registered charities, and have the same obligations to comply with tax law. In general terms there is little difference between exempt charities and charities registered with the Charity Commission. Our HMRC Charities Reference Number is XT29893

What is Gift Aid and how do I qualify?
Gift Aid is a government run scheme that allows charities to reclaim some of the tax that you have already paid to HMRC. Currently, this is equal to 25p for every £1 that you give.
Gift Aid does not cost you any extra and can make your donation worth an extra 25% to us, so it is a fantastic way of ensuring your donations go as far as they possibly can.
To qualify for Gift Aid you must be a resident of the UK that has paid Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax that is at least equal to the value of Gift Aid that will be reclaimed in the tax year. For example, if you make one donation of £10.00 in the tax year, as long as you have paid at least £2.50 in Income or Capital Gains Tax in the same tax year, this will qualify for Gift Aid.
To qualify for Gift Aid, you must also be a resident of the UK and be donating your own money – so a collection from friends and family would not qualify, nor would a donation made by someone else on your behalf.
To allow Denmark Road High School to claim Gift Aid on your donations, you must provide us with a Gift Aid declaration.
How do I make a Gift Aid declaration with Denmark Road High School?
When donating to Denmark Road High School we will always ask you if your donations qualify for Gift Aid, whether your donation is online or by using our donation form and posting it to us.
When donating online or by using one of our paper forms, all you need to do is enter your details and tick the box that contains the declaration.
If you set up a donation directly with your bank, either as a standing order or as a one-off payment, we would be grateful if you would use our donation form, as this enables us to collect a gift aid declaration and keep our records up to date. You can also complete a Gift Aid declaration using this link here, or we can send you one by email or post.
You may withdraw your declaration at any time.
Please also let us know if your name, address or taxpayer status changes so that we can update our records accordingly.
How long your Gift Aid declaration will last will be specified in your declaration but usually it will be until you tell us otherwise. Your declaration will usually allow Denmark Road High School to reclaim Gift Aid on the donations you have made in the last four tax years as well; so if you have forgotten to make a declaration for a donation you made previously, you still can!
What if I pay a higher rate of tax?
If you pay Income Tax at the higher or additional rate, you can claim the additional tax relief due to you by including all of your Gift Aid donations on your Self-Assessment tax return.
Please can you outline the benefits of tax efficient giving?
The following table shows an example of the possible benefits of tax efficient giving to both you as the donor and to us, here at Denmark Road for a £100 donation.
Tax Status of Donor | Actual Donation | Gift Aid claimed by DRHS | Total benefit to DRHS |
Value of tax relief to donor (claimed through Self-Assessment return) |
True cost of £100 donation to Donor |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Donor - Basic Rate Taxpayer | £100 | £25 | £125 | None | £100 |
Donor - Higher Rate Taxpayer | £100 | £25 | £125 | £25 | £75 |
Donor -Additional Rate Taxpayer* | £100 | £25 | £125 | £31.25 | £68.75 |
*It should be noted that you must actually have paid higher or additional rate income tax equal to the tax relief being claimed (and any CGT paid is not taken into account). For example, where your income is only just above the additional rate limit (currently £125,140), part of your donation may be eligible for additional rate relief and part for higher rate relief.
What happens to my donation if you don’t achieve your target and the project doesn’t go ahead?
We are committed to ensuring every contribution makes a meaningful impact. If we do not achieve a campaign fundraising target, we will look in the first instance to either extend the target deadline or reduce the scope of the project. If neither of these is practical or possible, any collected funds will be directed towards another DRHS campaign, ensuring your support continues to make a difference.
What happens to my donation if you overachieve your target and there are funds left over?
Should we be fortunate enough to exceed a campaign target, surplus funds will be channelled to the next appeal in line to meet its target. If all our current goals are met, additional contributions will fuel our Phase 2 fundraising plan, which includes exciting and impactful projects already in the pipeline. Further details on this soon.
